The Taylor Swift fans that have been converted into football followers have joked she has called out Travis Kelce’s teammate Kadarius Toney on her new song ‘The Alchemy’.
Swifties are certain that the song is about her romance Kelce, with multiple lines appearing to reference Kelce and his team’s Super Bowl success, with lyrics such as ‘Where’s the trophy? He just came running to me’,
But the line in the chorus of: ‘when I touch down, call the amateurs and cut ’em from the team’ is, according to some on social media, aimed at Kelce’s teammate Toney.
After the album came out at midnight on April 19, fans poured over the lyrics and took to social media to joke she was singing about Toney.
‘Speculation is rising that Taylor Swift is talking about Kadarius Toney in her new song,’ said one fan with a screengrab of the lyrics. Another wrote: ‘Taylor Swift has some notes for Andy Reid about Kadarius Toney.’
A different fan said: ‘The Alchemy is about Travis Kelce, but it also dunks on Kadarius Toney.’
Wide receiver Toney endured an inconsistent season on a personal level for the Chiefs, despite Kelce spearheading their charge to Super Bowl victory.
Most notably, he lined up offside before what would have been a Kelce-inspired game-winning play for the Chiefs against the Buffalo Bills on December 10.
With the Chiefs three points back and Swift watching from the stands, Kelce threw a stunning lateral pass to Toney who raced over the line for a touchdown in the dying moments of the game.
But as Arrowhead Stadium erupted, the referees agonizingly but correctly ruled the touchdown out because Toney was offside at the beginning of the play.
After that game, fans predicted that Toney would be a target of Swift’s wrath.
‘Taylor Swift is going to subtly destroy Kadarius Toney on the next album,’ joked NFL reporter Andrew Siciliano on the night of that game.
Another said: ‘Taylor Swift’s diss track against Kadarius Toney is gonna be a BANGER.’
Kelce, for his part, was quick to say he had no hard feelings towards Toney for his error.
‘I went up to KT today and was like “man, we had that place f***ing rocking”. Arrowhead was on fire after that play.
‘I was like “we’re just gonna have to do it again big dog”. Say what you want about him being in the neutral zone. You can’t put it in the ref’s hands in that position.
‘I love KT, if we get the opportunity again I’m gonna throw that s*** right into his chest again. I’ve got all the faith in the world in that dude. He’s one of our best players.
‘Watch what he does with the ball in his hands. All those people hating on KT right now, I’m not trying to hear it – you can f***ing miss me with it.’
