Josh Allen put on one of the performances of the NFL season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, but not everyone was happy with all of his exploits.
The Buffalo Bills quarterback finished the game with 342 passing yards and 82 rushing yards, while also becoming the first player in NFL history to finish a game with three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns.
Despite his efforts it wasn’t enough to stop the Bills from tasting defeat, as they fell 44-42 to the Rams at SoFi Stadium.
While there was plenty to examine from Allen’s spectacular performance, there was one incident that somewhat overshadowed his exploits on the field. At one moment during the game, Allen initiated the slightest of helmet-to-helmet contact with Rams defensive end Braden Fiske before throwing his head back in search of a penalty.
Despite his best efforts, Allen didn’t do enough to earn a flag. Nevertheless, Fox Sports host Nick Wright took aim at the Bills quarterback for his behaviour, calling him the real “sacred cow” of the NFL officials.
“Folks love to act like Mahomes is some sacred cow for NFL refs, when in reality, since he came into the league no one has gotten more roughing the passer penalties than Josh, and today he’s gotten 2 ridiculous ones and tried to flop his way into a 3rd,” Wright wrote on X.
Since making his NFL debut in 2018, Allen has eared 36 roughing-the-passer calls – the most of any quarterback during that time. As for Mahomes, he has received 28 over that same period.
While plenty of fans have voiced their displeasure over what they believe is preferential treatment for the Chiefs and Mahomes, there were several who sided with Wright over his Allen stance.
“It’s the one blemish on his game tbh,” wrote one fan, while another added: “As long as the narrative is against Mahomes and the Chiefs they are fine with complaining about it.”
A third fan joked: “Dude is at least the GOAT flopper. No one comes close.”
However, there were some who made it clear that Mahomes is a cut above Allen when it comes to getting calls.
“Mahomes is the biggest flopper in the sport. He’s the LeBron of the NFL and gets ridiculous calls every week,” one fan wrote.
